Red is a bright and very noticeable colour, which is why it was chosen for the stop sign in traffic lights; no doubt it was also for that reason that it was adopted by bullfighters in Spain, and so we get the phrase ‘like a red rag to a bull’.

It is the colour of energy, vitality, sexuality, force, joy, passion, anger, and aggression, always active and stimulating. However, much depends on the exact tone for the particular qualities associated with it.

It was symbolic of divinity for the Romans who tended to paint the faces of their gods red, and for the Christians is connected to Christ’s passion and Calvary. Red is also representative of fire, the masculine principle, festivity, martyrdom and the sun.
